October 15, 2018

  • Founded in 1968

  • Biggest chain of supermarket from Mexico

  • 800 stores all across the country

  • 104 000 employees

  • The logistic network includes 14 distribution centers in Mexico

Soriana has sustainable development policies and ambitious goals for 2021:

  • 40% of the energy used by the organization come from renewable energy.

  • Soriana wants to continue developing sustainable initiatives for its stores and warehouses.

  • The company is mainly interested in technologies that make efficient use of water.

  • The company also wants to optimize recycling practices and improve waste management.

In its 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, the company presented the following achievements:

  • 641 commercial units were supplied with 623,062,720 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable electricity, which represents 39.98% of the total energy used. This has prevented the emission of 282 000 876 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere;

  • They started operations of 2 new wind farms located in the state of Tamaulipas;

  • They have set up a monitoring center where they help 572 stores to reduce their energy consumption.

Following this commitment to the environment, Soriana aims, as part of its CSR report and objectives for 2021, to reduce its water consumption by 5%.

Challenge 1
Water efficiency

Water is in various processes:

  • Food and meals preparation (ex: fish cleaning);

  • Food preparation areas and floors cleaning

  • Bathrooms and sinks usage

Two ways are considered to improve efficiency: reduce the amount needed and recover and reuse when possible.

Expected TRL

6 – 9, proven and market ready solutions

Challenge 2

Waste Recycling Improvement

Merchandise and food processing generates a lot of material to recycle:

  • Plastics

  • Paper

  • Wood

  • Polystyrene

Actual recycling process involves bins to sort material on site but efficiency could be improved.

Solutions to reduce material at the source and reduce amount of waste are sought.

Expected TRL

7-9, market ready; "soft " or cultural change approach are also considered

Challenge 3

Merchandise Transport Efficiency

With 14 distribution centers across Mexico, food and merchandise are moved by truck between locations.

Soriana is looking for solutions to improve transport efficiency from distribution center to supermarket. Transport time must be maintained or reduced, while increasing efficiency. Energy efficiency systems for trucks, fuel conversion, electric trucks, electric lifts and logistic management systems are interesting for Soriana.

Expected TRL

7-9, market ready solutions
